Satellite-based roof measurement tools work well in dense suburbs with recent imagery. But there are three situations where they consistently fail — and they tend to be the exact jobs where fast, accurate measurements matter most.
Rural properties
Satellite providers capture imagery on update cycles. Rural areas get updated less frequently, and when they do, the resolution is often lower. A lot with 10 acres and a farmhouse at the end of a dirt road may have satellite imagery that's years old or simply missing.
New construction
A house built in the last 12 months may not exist in any satellite database. The lot shows up as bare ground or a foundation. There's no imagery to trace, no roof to measure, no estimate to generate.
Dense tree canopy
Trees block satellite imagery year-round in wooded lots. The satellite sees the canopy, not the roof underneath. You can try to measure around the gaps — or you can take one photo from the street.
